Still doing the building-up-walking thing. I did it in under 10 minutes yesterday! Not that speed is a goal, mind you, but I was keeping a pretty good pace throughout.
I have been doing 1-2 times per day, though, not 2-3 as I said below. I might've done it 3x maybe twice at that writing. BUT I think I need to add a trip.
I really think I've started something. Several people in the office have taken to doing this, and one woman who laughed at the idea of making it above the third floor, told me yesterday that she'd made it to nine! Yay Brenda!

Well, I started exercising last week. 1-2 times a day I walk up to the top (9th) floor of my office building. Each floor has stairwells at either end of a 100-yard or so hallway, so I walk up, across, up, across all the way to the top. Today I even went up 2, across, up 2, across. Wish me luck.

I'm going to have to reactivate this blog. I think I quit because I was ashamed of the eating I've been doing. Well, that's what the blog is for, to make me accountable for my eating, warts and all.
Today, I ate warts.
Not really. But I just wolfed down a slab of German Chocolate cake, and I've been eating a piece of cake every day for the last few weeks, in addition to large meals and desserts with dinner. So now I've admitted it. I have a problem eating. I will now start blogging my food again.
Pray for me.

Trouble Been eating a lot lately. I do mean a lot.
I think I need to work out. I don't know how I'm going to do that.
My priorities are skewy, I think.
I'm doing a lot of stuff that's undeniably positive for myself: my acting and my guitar playing come to mind. I need to do more with the wife and kids, I think.

Something of a mental breakthrough today.
I realized that almost all of my overeating is associated with family time.
I ate nachoes for lunch yesterday and enjoyed them, and then went home and without a second thought shoveled in a large dinner.
(Stick with me here)
The nachoes were planned. The dinner was not. In fact, I thought earlier that I would skip dinner. I certainly wasn't hungry.
So, the breakthrough is this: I'm only going to eat very, very lightly while at work.

My weird character: I have 3 protein bars: a lemon, a peanut butter fudge, and a double chocolate.
I am the only person I know who would do as I did today: eat the lemon (my least favorite) and save the others for another day. It didn't used to be this way. That is, I've always been like this, but I used to know other people who would do the same.
Sometimes I'll save a particularly nice-looking morsel on my plate for last. It is invariably that morsel that gets sniped when a certain someone (my wife, actually) asks for a bite.
I think it bodes well for the enduring power of my marriage that I've learned to give it to her without complaining.

Friday lunch at Aunt Jewel's...ham, roast beef, potatoes, all smothered in gravy.
I have to say I sort of planned on overeating these days.
Friday dinner was two slices of DiGiorno stuffed crust pizza. It were good.
Saturday breakfast was ham biscuits and eggs.

It's occurred to me that the approach to dieting that sells so many people is one that says, "lose weight without depriving yourself." That's backwards. I have to learn how much food your body really needs, and recognize the situations that trigger compulsive eating, and master the impulse to eat when I'm not physically hungry. Of *course* it feels like deprivation...I'm depriving myself of that method of fulfilling that impulse. But the impulse is growing smaller and weaker by the day.

Huzzah! Homeward bound with nary a snack attack. I was gratifyingly hungry throughout the afternoon, but nothing I couldn't deal with. I had a cup of tea a minute ago and will truly enjoy my supper.
Also had a good bit of stress from home today, the kind ($$, what else?) that would normally send me into the arms of Little Debbie. Vile hussy! Your hohos and devil squares are as bitter gall in my mouth!

Lunch: Trusoy crispy soy bar. Pretty good. I make no promises, but this could last me the afternoon. We'll see.

Breakfast: Quaker Instant Oatmeal Coffee
I brought a box of QIO pax to work and I'm going to try breakfasting on that.
I also brought a few "power bars" or "protein bars" or whatever the Xers are eating nowadays. I figure if I feel like a lite lunch I can eat those instead of whatever I bring in the tupperware. So, today's question: which will win, the roast chicken or the power bar?
New format starting today. I've set blogger to post chronologically within date.

No breakfast...got up and had coffee, then off to church. So I might say:
Breakfast: Bread Wine
I was nice and hungry during the service. That feeling is still with me. Lunch is coming up, and it will be good. But it's not like it's an "emergency." That was the feeling during services...I was hungry, and it was ok, pleasant.
Oh, I should mention I worked out yesterday (lightly with weights, slowly on the recumbent bike. Don't want to hurt myself.) I'm hoping I can add workouts to this page. I just have to figure out when to go. I feel like if I get up an hour earlier (6 instead of 7) and head right for the club, I'll still wind up later at work than I want to be.
Maybe instead of trying to figure it out, I could just try it and see how it goes.
Lunch: Vegetarian Chili Bread Sticks Mac & Cheese Chips & Salsa
Went to the movies w/Will. 1/2 a small popcorn, 1/2 a diet coke, and a big ol' honkin' movie pack of Butterfingers.
Dinner: Noshed on the chicken & rice I gave the kids. 2 Peeps
Had a brownie and ice cream later, during "9/11".
OK, so I've got a sweet tooth. I hope I helped myself by not overeating at meals.

Breakfast Bagel & CC (left 1/4) KK Chocolate Creme donut (ate the girls' leftover donuts to, about a bite each) Coffee Juice
1 peep. That's right...not a whole package of peeps. Not a row. (These are the denominations I usually work with.) 1 peep. Gave Will 2 and Ashton 1.
It was easy.
Lunch: Beans & Mac & Cheese Donut Cookie Ice Tea
Dinner: Ate at the Meeks's... Beef Stew w/Rice Bread Sticks Daiquiri Dr. Pepper & Rum.
Thank you, Blogger! This is the kind of accountability that really helps me.

Left off of last night: I ate the last of Will's spaghetti. It's interesting to me that I left that off. Yes, I forgot it while blogging...was I even aware of it while doing it?
Breakfast: I think skipping breakfast yesterday might have contributed to my extra eating in the afternoon. So even though I wasn't terribly hungry, I noshed on Frosted Wheat Squares throughout the morning. I feel my lunch-hunger approaching now...very interesting. I have a banana and an orange in case the munchies hit me this afternoon.
Lunchtime: I think I just had a conceptual breakthrough.
At my desk right now are the following food items:
- 1 Orange
- 1 Banana
- 1 Single-Serving pack of Fig Newtons
- 2 Hershey's Chocolate Kisses
- 1 Star Brite Mint
Now. Why, pray tell, knowing about all that food, was I walking down the hall thinking, "Hmmm...I'm hungry...time to go get some lunch." I am going to eat the above listed items and it will be my lunch. Why not? Not a bad lunch, really. Nothing green but I can get some greens at home tonight, I think.
I need to expand my food repertoire. That is, foods I think of as comprising a "meal". That way I might not feel quite so tempted to go get something dark and heavy if better foods are available.
14:00 That was a FINE lunch. Just FINE.
I also just had me a Mocha Java. I feel like I'll be ok until dinner.
Had a cookie and whiskey when I got home...
Dinner: Nachos (I refuse to say "Nacho Pie") Salad & Dressing Water

Waiting for the hunger! I might have a cuppa coffee or something, but I'm going to try the WDW technique of waiting until I experience actual hunger, not just a "desire to eat." This helps keep me mindful of how much I eat when I'm not hungry, hopefully permitting me to cut down on that.
It's 8:26. I'm somewhat mildly hungry but I have awhile to go before I'm really hungry.
10:03 I really, really wanted to eat a minute ago...but I'm not hungry! I cadged a Dove egg from a coworker's stash (she keeps them out for that purpose) and it was jolly good. I refuse to feel guilty about that.
Lunch: (I got hungry at about 11:30, just as a meeting let out.) Black Bean Soup 1 oz. Andy Capp Hot Fries Banana Water
So I just finished that entry when I got called into a meeting. Took a mint with me and sucked that through the meeting, and now I'm eating 4 Frosted Shredded Wheat squares. Thank you, Blogger!
2 more Dove eggs 2 more Frosted Shredded Wheat Squares.
It's the long afternoon does it to me. I've got to work something out here. I'm glad the above doesn't read "pack of zingers", and hopefully tonight won't include "4 cookies" (maybe 1?) but it's still not ideal. It's obvious I'm eating compulsively.
Dinner: Italian Sausage Parmigiana Sub Beer
Went to Will's PTA evening, where they had a bake sale going so I ate a small piece of Duncan Hines instant brownie. Then ate a Choco Chip cookie at home.

Breakfast: 1.5C Cheese grits (small slice of cheese!) Coffee
Lunch: BBQ Chicken Breast 1/2 baked potato Roll Water Mocha Java (mmm...instant hot chocolate dissolved in coffee!)
I grabbed a couple of star mints. I think they'll be better than the caramels...at least better for my teefs!
14:13: Heh. Star Mints working fine, caramel-wise, but I also ate a Thin Mint! Who says you can't eat just one? I carried it around in my shirt pocket for a couple minutes before eating it. Need a pithy aphorism here about shirt pockets adding sauce to the Thin Mint...
In my defense, I'd just come out of an interminable time-wasting meeting. At least I didn't walk down to the cafeteria and buy a pack of Zingers!
Home:1 choco chip cookie, then on to Karate!

2 caramels
Dinner: Chicken Breast Bread Stick Salad w/Ken's Creamy Tomato Bacon dressing Baked Potato 2 Chocolate chip cookies
1 (1!) Girl Scout Cookie during Buffy
OK, that cookie count is higher than I want it to be...but lower than it would've been if I weren't going to write it down.

Didn't. Yum.
OK, you're reading this and thinking that maybe this guy eats too many sweets. You don't know the half of it. I could have eaten my box of Girl Scout Cookies this morning for a snack, and probably would have if I didn't have to write them down. I will try not to eat more cookies tonight, but won't make any guarantees.
Well, one guarantee: I'll write it down here if I do.

Girl Scout Cookies are in! I'm going to take home the box I bought today and share it with the kids, maybe have one or two. And...NOTHING ELSE.

Lord, help me to remember that it is you, and not food, that I need to focus on.
This prayer came to me unbidden on the train this morning. I lost 50 pounds on Weigh Down Workshop and this is something like the prayers its founder, Gwen Shamblin, has us pray. I've gained a good bit of it back and it's not Gwen's fault, but I just don't see myself as being as focused on God-instead-of-food as she would have us be. I learned many valuable behavioral techniques in WDW, and I learned many spiritual things as well, but (and I'm sure I'm misstating much of WDW orthodoxy) the notion that God is the only substitute for food, and that God is the only power we need to overcome our food addiction, doesn't stick with me. I'm reminded of the man on his roof, waiting for God to save him from the flood. He'd ignored the orders to evacuate; he knew that God would save him. A rescue boat comes by, and the man says, "No, I don't need you. My faith is great. God will save me." The waters rise and force him onto his chimney. A helicopter comes and drops him a ladder. A rescuer comes down to him on the ladder but the man says, "Go and save someone else with lesser faith; I know that God will keep me safe." He is finally washed away in the flood and drowns. He arrives in Heaven and sees God. "God, my faith was great! Why did you not rescue me?" God's response: "What are you talking about? I sent an evacuation order, a boat and a helicopter!"
This weblog is like the rescue boat. Gwen (at least in first year WDW) tells us not to write down our food, and not to count calories, etc., but I enjoy this and the accountability appeals to me.
Next thing you know, I'll be posting my weight...

Dinner Chicken Pot Pie Broccoli Casserole 3 Chocolate Chip Cookies
I made it through the afternoon without a snack attack. I think this helped. But I don't know. Let's keep working on it.
