My Michael Moore Theory, that it is
And it is mine:
Moore's films are certainly worthy of the term "documentary," because, despite their lies and tendentious image-mongering, they represent an *exact* document of the inner life of large swaths of the left-liberal establishment at the time of the movie's release. It ain't a pretty sight, but it might be worth looking at for that reason alone. Same with BFC, for that matter. In fact, I might be able to watch them both, now that I've realized this.

Well thats one interpretation.
Of course if they were lies I am sure Mikey would have been sued for slander by now. And seeing as how he hasn't............

I agree that Fahrenheit 9/11 fits the definition of the "-umentary" part of the word.
But because of the wonton lies and distortions it is inaccurate to place the "doc" part at the front of the word.
A more apt prefix would be "crock". And I think someone already penned that handle for this film and the work of Moore. Notably, French filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard.
But I do agree there is value in the documentation of this crock. One day, when we have the luxury of putting some distance of time between current events and the making of this movie, we will be able to objectively look back upon it and analyze the psychosis of its maker and its time...much like Triumph Of The Will.
