Press Conference Bingo
Here's what Bush said when asked his view on homosexuality in the press conference today:
Q Thank you, sir. Mr. President, many of your supporters believe that homosexuality is immoral. They believe that it's been given too much acceptance in policy terms and culturally. As someone who's spoken out in strongly moral terms, what's your view on homosexuality?THE PRESIDENT: Yes, I am mindful that we're all sinners, and I caution those who may try to take the speck out of their neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own.
He then went on to defend the traditional view of marriage between men & women.
I just received in my in-box a note from a liberal friend that Bush responded to a question about homosexuality that, in essence, we all sin.
This is delicious loony left spin of the purest stripe. Right up there with Scalia's fake quote on homosexuals. Bingos to me-o if it takes off.

I, personally, am selectively revolted by that filthy "...log in their own..." remark.

I do wish the Republicans would get over their erotophopbia. I think their reputation as the party of bedroom raiders often prevents them from getting the support of people who agree with them otherwise.

I'm with you on that one, Guy. This Marriage Amendment talk is almost as embarrassing to me as the perennial Flag Amendment. It's a tradeoff, I guess, politically, though one wonders where those who would be offended by reaching out to gays would go.
I think what outrages a lot on the left about this is that Bush missed a golden opportunity to preen and prance his open-mindedness before the assembled. Think of a liberal leftist president getting this question and thunderingly announcing that it's NOT a sin and that it's NOT a problem with the clear implication that anybody who disagrees with him on the moral or legal issues must be some kind of BIGOT. You don't pass up an opportunity like that without raising some eyebrows, I guess.
As for you, Chris, all I can say is, READ YOUR BIBLE!!! And realize: Use of the word "log" really does beg the question: "speck of WHAT??"

I think part of the problem is that, war issues aside, the Prez has been alienating conservatives with his "If it spends, I'll sign it" approach to domestic legislation.
The hell of it is, he's not getting any credit for it on the Dem's side, either. Whereas if he were less profligate with the money, but willing to make the big symbolic gesture, he might alienate the theocrats on the right, but he'd be solid with the mainline fiscal conservatives.
